Inspired by landscapes and the expressive power of materials, Carolyn explores the encounter between abstraction and figuration in her painting practice. She works with oil paint, acrylics, and mixed media on canvas.
Her work is rooted in an interest in the landscape backgrounds of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century painting and in the dramatic sensibility of the Baroque period. Elements such as strong compositions, chiaroscuro contrasts, and attention to detail are translated into a contemporary visual language in which energy, movement, and colour play a central role.
The paintings unfold as atmospheric landscapes in which clouds, textures, and open spaces emerge. They move between spontaneous, physical gestures and more refined interventions, while deliberately remaining open in meaning. Within this tension, Carolyn searches for a balance between calmness and intensity, between clarity and ambiguity.
The title Moments of Sonder originated during a personal period in which her life was profoundly shaped by both motherhood and a journey through illness and recovery. During this time, she became increasingly aware that every person carries their own story — often invisible to the outside world.
This awareness forms an underlying layer within the work. Without imposing a fixed narrative, the paintings invite stillness and reflection, leaving space for personal interpretation and recognition.
